How to Choose a Gaming Console: Questions to Ask Before You Buy
The questions that decide which console suits you: games, how you play, real costs, physical vs digital, subscriptions and PC options.

Choosing a console is easier when you start with how you play, not with specs. Here are the questions that matter and how the main options compare in general terms.
1. Which games do you want to play?
Exclusive games are still the biggest reason to pick one platform over another. Make a list of five games you really want, and check which platforms they're on. Many big multiplatform games appear everywhere, but each platform holder has its own studios and franchises.
2. Where and how do you play?
- On a TV at home: a home console or a gaming PC.
- On the go or in bed: a handheld or hybrid.
- With family and friends in the same room: platforms with strong local multiplayer and family-friendly games.
- Online with friends: check which platform your friends use, and whether the game supports cross-play.
3. How much do you want to spend over time?
The console is only part of the cost. Consider:
| Cost | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Games | New releases can be expensive; check how often prices drop |
| Online subscription | Usually needed for online multiplayer on consoles, often with game libraries included |
| Storage | Large games fill drives quickly |
| Extra controllers | Essential for local multiplayer |
4. Physical or digital?
Disc versions let you buy, sell and trade used games. Digital-only versions are often cheaper upfront but you'll buy every game digitally. Decide which fits how you shop.
5. Subscriptions and libraries
Subscription services with large game libraries can be great value if you like trying many games. Look at which games are included, how often the library changes and whether new releases are part of it.
6. Is a PC or handheld PC a better fit?
A gaming PC offers flexibility, huge game libraries and frequent sales, but costs more upfront and needs more setup. Handheld PCs bring part of a PC library to a portable device. They're a good fit if you already own PC games.
A quick decision guide
- You love exclusive franchises: choose the platform that has them.
- You mainly play with friends online: choose what your friends use.
- You travel or share the TV: consider a hybrid or handheld.
- You want the biggest library and deals: consider PC.
There's no single best console, only the best one for the games and the way you play.
